General Avarris Biology
An Avarri (Plural = Avarris) is a semi-humanoid creature of human inteligence. Appearance-wise they are similar to Fauns and Satyrs, with the key difference being that an Avarri has animalistic parts that are similar to dragons, birds, fish, bugs, even plants and gems!
There currently are Seven species of Avarris, all of which have their own specific looks and individual traits. The most common breed of Avarris are Scaled and Feathered. An Avarri is able to produce offspring with all the other sub-breeds as as well as the fairly common Avia harpies that also inhabit the land. They can not produce children with the humans and elves, but are welcome to pursue relationships with them.
All Avarris are able to assume a dragon-like form, being free to change their form as many times as they desire, however changing form too often is very draining on them and will eventually result in them passing out from exhaustion. An Avarri is also capable of assuming a fully human form, changing all their beast-like parts, aside from their teeth and eyes, to fit in more with the human and elven populations.
If an Avarri is elementally inclined (or taught) they are able to spit up a plasma-like form of said element, similar to breathing fire. Breathing fire is fairly common among the population, however the color may vary depending on what a Avarri last ate. Although it's also rather common that an Avarri doesn't have any elemental affinity and they are unable to use any sort of element to their advantage, these can either stay neutral or be taught elemental magic if so desired.
All Avarris except for Ade'rii (Aquatic) have a specialized organ that allows them to store their elemental magic, even if they can't directly use it. This is a gas bladder that sits fairly close to their heart, (to the right of it). It is advised for their health that this bladder is used on occasion to prevent sickness or a very unpleasant pain similar to a kidney stone. Those that are unable to breathe ''fire'' can be helped with special tools that are very publicly available.

Dragon forms
All Avarris have a dragon form they can shift into. Rarely being taller than their humanoid form. Avarris in their dragon form might stand on their hind legs, but isn't very comfortable for most of them. Avarris in their dragon form usually do have a thumb, but this largely depends on the individual as the thumb can also be a dew-claw, or be missing entirely.
Avarris with wings will keep their wings in this form, as all of their original coloration.
Avarris in their dragon form do NOT get extra traits or markings, they will stay the same in coloration as their original humanoid form!
The way an Avarris' dragon form looks is dependant on their sub-breed:
Scaled Avarris tend to look more lizard-like with a stocky body and square-ish face, they are commonly more close to the ground and one of the shortest in their dragon form.
Feathered have beaks and often resemble birds, even commonly walking on their hind legs for easier perching and using their hands to collect items.
Aquatic have rounder faces and are very aerodynamic, they typically also sport a longer body.
Armored have a fairly flat face with mandibles covering their snout, as well as their body having been split in various segments, just like their human form. They most commonly lack the thumb/dew-claw the other Avarris have.
Fiora have slim faces and are largely covered in vines, as well as commonly having a very long tongue and lacking teeth.
Skarrid are typically very serpentine.

Birth Defects
Some Avarris have been recorded to have some sort of centaurism, it's a birth defect that originates from a parasitic conjoined twin, usually the extra sets of limbs are fully functional.
There are cases of an Avarri being born without their hind legs. How this mutation occurs is unclear, it is possible that the legs never fully developed or that the legs merged with the tail at some point. it's a common thing among aquatic Avarris. They are more at home in the sea, as their mobility on solid ground is limited. But with some practice and tools to help them out, they are able to have a pretty good life on land. Centaurism and the lack of hind legs can affect all known sub-species of Avarris, however extra arms are particularly common among Skarrid and Armored sub-breeds. |
Some Avarri are unable to fully shift between their humanoid and dragon forms. These Avarris are referred to as Stunted. They lack the ability to hide some of their draconic features in human form, as well as lacking the ability to take on a fully feral form. Their dragon forms are more humanoid, keeping features such as their faces being mostly flat and still being bipedal. They commonly also keep their humanoid ears in this form. This stunted form is rare among the species.
Avarris lifespan
Avarris age slower than a human and lives a lot longer. Generally where humans only live to become 100, Avarris can live up to 800 years. Because their slower aging, Avarris reach full adulthood at around 50 years old.
Avarris lifespans are generally as follows:
Hatchling: 0-3
Toddler: 4-6
Child: 7-18
Teenager: 19-30
Adolescent: 31-50
Adult: 51-300
Late Adult / Elder: 301-800
